Privacy notice

Your notes are yours.

Last updated October 15, 2026

Expr doesn't collect any data about you, and Gofio never sees your notes.

  • No account to create, and no sign-in.
  • No analytics, no advertising and no tracking, inside the app or across other apps and websites.
  • Your notes are kept on your devices and, only if you turn on sync, in your own iCloud account.

This notice covers the Expr app for Mac, iPad and iPhone, and this website. Expr is made by Gofio LLC ("Gofio"), a one-person studio. The rest of this page explains, in plain terms, the few places where Expr talks to anything outside your device.

Your notes

Notes, folders and settings are stored on your device, inside Expr's own storage. They aren't sent to Gofio or to anyone else, and there's no Expr server that could receive them.

Deleting Expr from a device removes the notes stored on that device.

iCloud sync and sharing

Sync with iCloud is off by default and is turned on per device in Settings. When it's on, your notes and folders are stored in the private database of your own iCloud account, through Apple's CloudKit. Gofio can't read or access that data. A note's name and contents are stored as encrypted fields, and are end-to-end encrypted if you've turned on Advanced Data Protection for iCloud.

If you share a note, the people you invite can see and edit that note, and only that note. You can stop sharing at any time.

iCloud is provided by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy. To delete what Expr keeps in iCloud, turn off sync and remove Expr's data in your device's iCloud storage settings.

Exchange rates

When a note uses a currency, Expr downloads the day's reference exchange rates (published by the European Central Bank) from Frankfurter, an open-source rates service, at most every 12 hours. The request asks only for the latest rates. It contains nothing about you or your notes. As with any connection on the internet, that service can see your device's IP address.

Offline, Expr simply keeps using the rates it already has.

Agents and automation

On the Mac, Expr includes an MCP server so that AI agents you choose (such as Claude) can read and write your notes. It runs entirely on your Mac and does nothing until you set it up; macOS also asks for your permission the first time an app tries to control Expr.

Once you connect an agent, the notes it reads or writes, and anything you ask it, are sent to that agent and its provider, and handled under their privacy policy. Expr itself sends nothing to Gofio.

Shortcuts and AppleScript actions run on your device.

Tips

Expr is free. Its optional tips are in-app purchases handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. Gofio never receives your payment details, and a tip unlocks nothing, so Expr keeps no record of who tipped.

Diagnostics

Expr contains no crash reporting or analytics of its own. If you've chosen in your device's settings to share analytics with app developers, Apple may share crash reports and anonymous usage statistics with Gofio. You can change that in Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Analytics & Improvements.

Exports

When you export or share a note as a file (PDF, HTML, text or an Expr note), it goes where you send it, and nowhere else.

This website

This site uses no cookies, analytics or tracking. Fonts and the math typesetting library are loaded from Google Fonts and cdnjs, and the hosting provider, Netlify, may keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses, for security and reliability.

If you write in through the support page, your name, email address and message are delivered to Gofio through Netlify. They're used only to reply to you, and you can ask for them to be deleted.

Children

Expr collects no personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes

If how Expr handles data ever changes, this page and the date at the top will be updated before the change ships.
